Nora Markard is a founding member and Vice President of the Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte e.V. (GFF). GFF's mission is to establish a sustainable structure for successful strategic litigation in the area of human and civil rights in Germany and Europe. Founded in 2015, it has already brought several cases on data privacy, freedom of information and the freedom of the press to the German Federal Constitutional Court. Rights empowerment and mobilization are key to Nora's work. She is a co-founder of the Humboldt Law Clinic Human and Fundamental Rights in Berlin and the director of the Refugee Law Clinic Hamburg, for which she and her team received the 2016 Hamburg Teaching Prize for law and the 2017 Hamburg Diversity Prize. She also advises the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) on its migration and gender litigation. Nora is a Junior Professor for Public Law, International Law and Global Constitutionalism at the University of Hamburg and studied Law and International Relations in Berlin, Paris and London. She holds a PhD from Humboldt University and an MA from King’s College London and was a visiting fellow at the University of Michigan and at Columbia Law School. She has published widely on international and constitutional law issues, with a focus on inequalities and forced migration; her PhD on war refugees won the 2012 Humboldt prize.
